Assignment Capsule

This role is on the advanced analytics team within the actuarial department of the employer group organization. The employer group organization is responsible for managing the business and serving the needs of employers who offer Humana’s insurance and wellbeing services to their employees and dependents. The actuarial department is focused on pricing, financial analysis, and forecasting, among other things, and consists of actuaries and other technical and business professionals. The advanced analytics team works both within the actuarial department and beyond it to serve future-oriented analytical needs requiring more advanced statistical techniques and larger data sets, often in order to make predictions for every employer or member.

Responsibilities include:

  • Interact with internal data contacts and external data vendors to find, understand, and use big data that will help meet our objectives
  • Pull data together from various sources in an automated reusable way, to support exploratory data analysis, building predictive models, scoring new data, and evaluating the results of models
  • Develop predictive models using linear and non-linear regression, clustering, decision trees, random effects, general optimization, and other statistical and data mining methods
  • Implement models by writing specifications for IT developers, working with developers to ensure understanding, and helping to test the final product
  • Provide analytics advice to actuaries, segment leadership, and other project teams
  • Support other data, analysis, or ad hoc requests to promote member well-being and to help Humana succeed in the marketplace
  • Take pride in explaining, testing, refitting, and otherwise supporting predictive models that others rely upon

    Role Essentials

  • Bachelor's Degree in Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Engineering or a related field

  • 2 years as a practicing Data Scientist (or related role), using advanced techniques beyond linear and logistic regression, including evaluating the reliability of such models
  • Programming experience in SAS, R, Python, or other statistic software language (in addition to SQL)
  • Experience building and maintaining analytic data sets
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate results of statistical models to broad audience, including senior leadership

    Role Desirables

  • Advanced degree or credentials in Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Engineering or a related field

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications
  • Applied knowledge of health insurance or well-being products, data and business
  • Extensive experience in SAS or R
  • Experience predicting future claim costs or other dollar amounts with high variability
  • Ability to communicate and teach statistical concepts to other business professionals
